Shawna has spent the last twenty years researching and crafting the practice of Readers and Writers Workshop as a teacher, literacy coach and staff developer by attending The New York Teachers College summer seminars, working “in house” alongside New York Teachers College consultants and staying close to classrooms to align practices organized around units of study. These aligned practices include workshop structures, formative and summative assessment, read aloud with accountable talk, differentiated small group instruction through guided reading and strategy groups, and conferring structures.

Whether schools or districts are looking for year-long or one day seminars, coaching with planning committees toward school improvement goals or instructional demonstration within lab classrooms – Shawna utilizes strategies for successful outcomes and improved engagement and skill for teachers and students.

Shawna co-created and is the co-presenter for the K-5 Reading Workshop Series offered through Oakland Schools Intermediate School District in Oakland County, which has run for nine consecutive years and has influenced thousands of education professionals. Shawna lives in Brandon Township, MI where her husband, three sons and mini-schnauzer make sure she spends time away from seminars, unit writing, and consulting.
